Year 3

About the Staff

Mrs Gardner and Mrs Martin are the Year 3 teachers. We are supported by teaching assistants attached to the class, Mrs Wright and Mrs Ozgezgin.

 Introduction to the Year

Welcome to the first year in Key Stage 2!

Alongside our work in English, maths and science we complement and consolidate much of our learning skills within topic work.

The autumn term begins with a topic based on Wartime Britain –The children look at Britain during World War 2.  We discuss the blitz, and how specifically this would have affected children in Britain.  We think largely about children who were evacuated from London to Morecambe and the effects on families. We compare houses of Wartime Britain to our own. The children are taught a variety of songs from the Wartime era to link with our topic work

In spring  our topic focuses  on books, the history of printing, including looking at the printing press.  We  think about the location of Morecambe library and the school library and what libraries are used for. The children will write and make their own books.

The summer term topic This term our topic will focus on Rainforests. We will study the animals that live in the rainforest, how the rainforest is constructed, and the conditions there and in different regions of the earth. We will create art, writing and design technology activities based on the rainforest.

Things to know about Year 3

Outdoor games lessons are on Thursday afternoons – across the year we cover skills relating to netball, tennis, hockey, rounders and athletics. The children need to bring the appropriate kit to school each week.

Indoor P.E. takes place for the first half of the year, which includes gymnastics and dance work. In the second half of the year the children in Year 3 go to Heysham Pool for swimming lessons each week on Thursday afternoons. These sessions are organised qualified swimming teachers. It is always beneficial for children to have the opportunity to visit a pool before we begin our class lessons

Spelling homework is sent home each Friday and tested by the following Thursday..

The children are asked to read regularly at home every week day. Reading record books need to be brought to school each day.
